Japanese fireworks in 2027: four festivals you can plan around now, and the Osaka display that moved to October
If you are planning around Japanese fireworks in 2027, the useful question right now is not which display is biggest. It is which dates you can already count on and which ones are still unannounced. None of the eight major festivals has published a 2027 date, but four have an official fixed rule you can book flights against. One has quietly changed months, and planning from old information will put you a whole season out.
Japanese fireworks in 2027: the four you can plan around now
The dates below are derived from each organiser’s or local government’s published rule. They are not announced 2027 dates, and the confirmed date still has to come from the organiser.
| Festival | The official fixed rule | Date implied for 2027 | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks (Niigata) | 2 and 3 August every year, 19:20 to 21:25 on both days | Mon 2 Aug, Tue 3 Aug | Nagaoka Hanabi Foundation |
| Suwako Lake Fireworks (Nagano) | 15 August every year | Sun 15 Aug | Suwa City |
| Omagari National Fireworks Competition (Akita) | The last Saturday of August | Sat 28 Aug | Daisen City |
| Tsuchiura National Fireworks Competition (Ibaraki) | The first Saturday of November | Sat 6 Nov | Tsuchiura City |
What makes these four safe to plan around is that the rule itself is published officially, so booking flexible flights and rooms carries limited risk even before the announcement. One correction worth making: Omagari is the last Saturday of August, not the fourth Saturday, per Daisen City. In some years those are a week apart.
The four still unannounced: know the range, not the date
- Sumidagawa Fireworks (Tokyo): Taito City says only “late July every year”, with no fixed weekday from the organiser. The 49th edition in 2026 was 25 July. 2027 is the 50th, which may bring something special, so watch the official site.
- Jingu Gaien Fireworks (Tokyo): no annual rule published at all. The 2026 edition was 8 August, with 9 August as the reserve date.
- Lake Biwa Fireworks (Shiga): the organiser has never declared a fixed weekday or date, and the 40th anniversary edition in 2026 fell on Thursday 6 August.
- Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks (Osaka): moved to October. See below.
The one most likely to catch you out: Osaka Yodogawa moved to October
This is the item on the list that most needs updating. The organiser’s announcement states that the event is held in October, continuing from the previous year, meaning it moved from its traditional August slot in 2025 and stayed there in 2026.
| Detail | What the organiser publishes |
|---|---|
| 2026 edition | 38th edition, Saturday 17 October 2026, 19:00–20:00 |
| Venue | The Yodogawa riverbed, between Shin-Midosuji / Shin-Yodogawa Bridge and Route 2 / Yodogawa Bridge |
| Reason for the move | Not stated in the announcement |
| A new fixed rule | Not yet defined |
So if you see a source saying the Yodogawa display is on the first Saturday of August, that rule predates 2024. Whether it stays in October for 2027 has not been announced either, so check the organiser’s site before committing to Osaka dates.
Two arrangements introduced in 2026 that may carry into 2027
Getting online at a fireworks festival: timing matters more than data
Crowd density at these events is several times that of a normal attraction, and cell load climbs sharply in the half hour after the finale. That is physics, and no carrier is immune. The one thing that genuinely works is to move anything you will need at peak crowd offline, in advance.
- Save before you arrive: return train times, the last service, your meeting point, the seating map and any ticket QR codes, as screenshots rather than apps you open on the night.
- Agree the meeting point early: photograph it so you are not making calls when the network is saturated.
- Power bank: with the screen and camera running all evening, battery usually runs out before data does.
- Data itself: 1GB a day normally covers it; most of a fireworks night’s usage is video uploads, which can wait until afterwards.
- ・Choose your data and day count, with consistently stable speed
- ・The pick for iPhone; for Android, KDDI’s own network. Both are native rather than roaming
- ・Refundable if the signal is unstable or the plan goes completely unused
Picking days and data for fireworks season
- Days: land day to departure day, plus one if a red-eye crosses midnight.
- Data: 1GB a day is the city baseline; go a tier up if you shoot and upload a lot of video.
- Handset: iPhone on Softbank native, Android on KDDI native. Both cover all of Japan including Okinawa.
- Travel time: Nagaoka, Omagari and Tsuchiura are not in major cities, so you will spend far longer navigating than on a Tokyo-only trip.
- ・All of Japan including Okinawa, on a native network rather than roaming
- ・No physical SIM to swap, installed before you leave home
- ・Refundable if the signal is unstable or the plan goes unused

Japan fireworks FAQ
Have the 2027 Japanese fireworks dates been announced?
Not yet. None of the eight major festivals checked here had published a 2027 date as of 6 October 2026. Four of them do have a fixed rule stated by the organiser or the local government, which you can plan around: Nagaoka on 2 and 3 August every year, Suwako on 15 August, Omagari on the last Saturday of August, and Tsuchiura on the first Saturday of November.
Is the Osaka Yodogawa display still in August?
No. The organiser's own announcement says the event is held in October, continuing from the previous year, so it moved from its traditional August slot in 2025. The 38th edition in 2026 runs on Saturday 17 October, 19:00 to 20:00. Anything still saying 'first Saturday of August' is out of date.
Is Sumidagawa always the last Saturday of July?
There is no official statement to that effect. Taito City's page says only 'late July every year', and the organiser publishes no fixed weekday. The 49th edition in 2026 fell on 25 July. Treat late July as the range, not a specific date.
Do I need a ticket for the Jingu Gaien fireworks?
Yes. The organiser states plainly that anyone without a ticket cannot watch. The venues are Jingu Stadium and Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium, tickets are required from age four, and under-threes are free on a parent's lap. This is the existing arrangement, not a recent change.
How much data should I budget for a fireworks night?
Crowd density at these events is extreme and cell load rises noticeably, which is physics rather than a plan difference. The practical move is to screenshot your return train times, meeting point and seating map before you arrive, so you are not competing for bandwidth with a few hundred thousand people on the way out. The data itself is not the issue; 1GB a day usually covers it.
Which Japanese network should I pick?
For iPhone, Softbank's own network lets you choose data and days with consistently stable quality. For Android, KDDI's own network is the pick, and it works on iPhone too as long as the handset supports eSIM. Both cover all of Japan including Okinawa.
