Japan eSIM Compared 2026: SoftBank, KDDI Native or Dual-Network (Android Users Read This First)
There are three Japan eSIM lines to choose from: SoftBank native, KDDI native, and KDDI/SoftBank dual-network. This guide lays out how the three differ and who each one suits, so you can see which fits your trip.
Our top recommendations are SoftBank native and KDDI native. Both run on Japanese native networks and deliver fast, stable connections. SoftBank native offers five plans (1GB, 2GB, 3GB or 5GB per day, or unlimited), each available from 1 day up to 30 days, which makes it the first choice for iPhone travellers who want to match data to their itinerary. KDDI native is built around high-speed unlimited data, ideal for all-day navigation, uploading video or other heavy use. On an Android phone we recommend KDDI native, which works on Android and iPhone; if you want to pick your own data and days, the KDDI/SoftBank dual-network eSIM is another option.

SoftBank is one of Japan's major carriers, and its native line is fast and stable. Choose from 1GB, 2GB, 3GB or 5GB per day, or unlimited, with every plan available from 1 day up to 30 days, so there is a good fit for any trip length and usage. KDDI native: the high-speed unlimited Japan eSIM we recommend for Android
KDDI native | First choice for Android, high-speed unlimited
KDDI is one of Japan's major carriers. KDDI native gives you high-speed unlimited data on a fast, stable line and works on Android and iPhone (any eSIM-compatible phone), ideal for all-day driving with navigation, uploading photos and video on the go, or sharing data with other devices. Available for 3 to 10 days or 15 days; unlimited plans are subject to a fair usage policy.
See KDDI native plans →KDDI/SoftBank dual-network: when you want to choose your own plan
The KDDI/SoftBank dual-network eSIM supports both carriers and automatically connects to whichever has the stronger signal where you are. It installs on Android and iPhone, with total-data plans (3/5/10/20GB), daily plans (1/2/3GB per day) and unlimited, from 1 to 30 days. It is an option for Android users who want to choose daily or total data and days.
Choosing a Japan eSIM data plan
- Daily data: a fixed allowance each day. Once it is used, speed drops to 128kbps until it refreshes the next day.
- Total data: one allowance for the whole trip that stops when used up, suited to steady usage.
- Unlimited: ideal for heavy data days, subject to a fair usage policy.
For typical city sightseeing we suggest 2GB to 3GB per day for comfortable headroom. If you will drive with navigation all day, upload video or share data, go straight for unlimited.
About fair usage: unlimited plans run smoothly for normal travel use. If a very large amount of data is used in a short time (for example hours of HD streaming or backing up an entire photo library to the cloud), the carrier may adjust speeds.
Daily reset and day counting
- SoftBank native: the daily allowance resets at 23:00 Japan time.
- Day counting (all three lines): counting starts when you scan the QR code; day one runs until 23:59 Taiwan time and day two begins at 00:00.
- QR code valid for 30 days: order a day or two before departure and scan it on the day you leave.
Japan eSIM coverage
All three Japan eSIMs share the same coverage: all of Japan, including Okinawa. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya and Fukuoka, including their subway stations, are covered, as are suburbs and sightseeing areas across the country. If you are driving into the mountains or remote areas, downloading an offline map beforehand makes the trip even smoother.
