Japan Cherry Blossom 2027: Timing the Trip and Staying Connected

The hard part of a cherry blossom trip is not choosing where to go, it is timing. Peak shifts by several days each year, and arriving a week early means bare branches. This guide lays out the long-term bloom dates by region, explains why full bloom is the date that matters, and covers what a hanami itinerary does to your phone.

Cherry blossom dates across Japan

These are the 1991-2020 averages. Japan stretches a long way north to south, so the season runs about six weeks from Fukuoka to Sapporo.

RegionAverage first bloomAverage full bloom
Fukuoka22 March31 March
Tokyo21 March31 March
Nagoya23 March2 April
Osaka24 March4 April
Kyoto25 March4 April
Kanazawa—8 April
Sendai—13 April
Hirosaki (Aomori)—26 April
Sapporo (Hokkaido)—6 May

(Source: Japanese 1991-2020 climate normals, checked October 2026.) A mild winter pulls the season earlier, a cold spring pushes it back, so treat these as "which week" rather than "which day".

First bloom versus full bloom

First bloom is declared as soon as a handful of flowers open on the reference tree. The canopy is still thin at that point. Full bloom follows about a week later, and the three to five days from that date are when the trees look their best. Plan around the forecast full-bloom date plus three days and a small revision to the forecast will not ruin the trip.

  • Three or four days only: Tokyo, or Kyoto and Osaka. Peak lands late March to early April and flight options are widest.
  • Avoiding crowds: Kanazawa or Sendai run one to two weeks later for a similar scene with far fewer people.
  • Travelling late April: Hirosaki and Hokkaido are still ahead of you.

How to use the 2027 forecasts

1
Late December to January. First forecasts appear. Wide margins, useful only for picking a direction and a rough week.
2
Late February. With real winter temperatures in hand the forecasts tighten. This is the lowest-risk moment to book flights and rooms.
3
Weekly from March. Check the bloom reports again the week you fly and decide which spot to hit first.

Why hanami is harder on your phone than a normal trip

  • Crowds concentrate. A famous spot in peak week behaves like a stadium event, and uploads slow down first.
  • You are outdoors all day, checking bloom reports, finding food and tracking where your group went.
  • Evening illuminations add a second rush, and you lean on maps more once it is dark.
  • Plans change on the day. One rainy night can end the peak, so you end up re-planning on your phone.

On iPhone, the Japan eSIM runs on the Softbank network and covers all of Japan including Okinawa. On Android, KDDI is the one to take. The differences are set out in choosing between the three Japan eSIMs.

Three things to finish before you fly

  • Install the eSIM at home and activate it after landing, so you are not queuing at the airport.
  • Register on Visit Japan Web. The combined QR code lives on your phone and you need data to pull it up. See the Visit Japan Web guide.
  • Save the day's route offline, so a slow connection in a crowd does not leave you stuck.

Japan cherry blossom 2027 FAQ

When do cherry blossoms bloom in Japan in 2027?

Start from the long-term averages: Tokyo opens around 21 March and peaks about 31 March, Osaka and Kyoto peak around 4 April, Kanazawa 8 April, Sendai 13 April, Hirosaki 26 April and Sapporo 6 May. Those are 1991-2020 means; the real dates shift by several days depending on how warm the winter was, and 2027 forecasts start appearing from late December.

Should I plan around first bloom or full bloom?

Full bloom. First bloom is declared when a few flowers open on a sample tree and the canopy still looks bare. It takes roughly a week to reach full bloom, and the best three to five days begin on the full-bloom date. Booking to land just after the forecast peak is safer than aiming at first bloom.

When are the forecasts published?

Japanese private weather companies publish a first round between late December and January, then update weekly until the season ends. Early rounds carry a wide margin; the versions from late February onward are the ones worth booking around.

Is mobile data slower at hanami spots?

At the famous spots during peak week, yes. Crowds concentrate on a small area and uploads are the first thing to slow down, especially during evening illuminations. Shoot first and upload after you leave the crowd, and choose a plan that runs on a carrier's own network rather than roaming.

How much data does a hanami trip use?

A full day outdoors with maps, bloom updates and photo uploads sits comfortably at about 2GB a day. If you plan to record video or stream, take an unlimited plan so you are not watching the meter.
