Eight Things People Get Wrong About Travel eSIMs in 2026
eSIMs are not difficult. What catches people out is that a few of the rules run against intuition. These eight account for the overwhelming majority of our support messages, and nearly all of them are avoidable at the moment of purchase or installation.
The eight things people get wrong about travel eSIMs
1. "Every eSIM can be installed early"
No. Most Japan, Korea and Europe plans can be installed a day or two ahead. Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand plans start counting days at installation or activation, so installing early simply burns them. Read the product page before you buy.
2. "You can install an eSIM without any internet"
You cannot. Activation downloads a profile, so a phone with no connection at all cannot install one. Do it on departure day while airport wifi or your home line still works.
3. "Buying an eSIM means removing my own SIM"
The opposite. Not having to remove it is the whole point — your home line stays in and keeps receiving texts such as bank codes, while the eSIM carries data. The setup is in what to do with your own number abroad.
4. "Data roaming should be off for the eSIM"
It must be ON. A travel eSIM reaches the local network by roaming, so switching it off leaves you with nothing. The line that needs roaming turned off is your home number. The two go in opposite directions, and confusing them is the number one cause of "installed but no data".
5. "Unlimited means unlimited speed"
Most "unlimited" plans carry a throttling threshold: past a daily or total allowance the speed drops. What to compare is how high the threshold is and how slow it gets after — not whether the word "unlimited" appears. More in unlimited is not unthrottled.
6. "Any phone can use an eSIM"
No. Tablets, some customised handsets, carrier-locked contract phones, and jailbroken or rooted devices are all excluded. Dial the device-info code and look for an EID before ordering. The compatible device list has the details.
7. "The QR code keeps indefinitely"
It does not. eSIMs generally must be activated within 30 days of delivery. Buying about a week before departure is plenty; buying months ahead risks expiry.
8. "Hotspotting always works"
Sharing is supported on most plans, but we cannot promise every device and plan combination works — and the moment the group splits up, whoever was tethered is offline. Our standing advice is one eSIM per phone.

Travel eSIM misconceptions: FAQ
So when should I install it?
Most Japan, Korea and Europe plans: a day or two early. Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand: on departure day, because the clock starts at installation or activation. The universal rule is that the phone needs a connection while installing.
It installed but there is no data at all — what is most likely?
Usually data roaming is off on the eSIM line, or mobile data is still assigned to your home number. The eight-step checklist resolves most cases within the first three steps.
The QR code will not scan.
Common causes are screen glare, a compressed image, or trying to scan your own screen with the same phone. Manual entry is the reliable fallback — see six reasons a QR code will not scan.
Can one eSIM be installed on two phones?
No. The profile installs to a single device and cannot be moved to another handset afterwards. Travel companions each need their own.
What if I change phones mid-trip?
Rules vary by plan and carrier. Read does the eSIM move to a new phone before switching handsets abroad.
Can I get a refund if I bought the wrong thing?
Unused plans are covered by our money-back guarantee. If you are unsure before buying, message LINE @peanutmo / WhatsApp +886-921-963-203 with your handset model and itinerary and we will confirm it for you.
