Bars But No Speed? Five Reasons a Travel eSIM Crawls, and a 30-Second Test

It connects, but maps will not load. The bars are full and the indicator says 3G. This "online but unusable" state is a different problem from having no signal at all, and it is usually not because you ran out of data.

Five reasons a travel eSIM slows down, most likely first

1
You are attached to a weak partner network. A travel eSIM roams onto local carriers and the handset sometimes sticks to a poor one. Fix: Settings → Cellular → Network Selection → turn Automatic off → try a different carrier.
2
The phone is locked to 3G or 4G. Check Voice & Data (iPhone) or Preferred network type (Android) and make sure it is on 5G Auto or 4G, not 3G.
3
The plan throttles after a threshold. Plenty of "unlimited" plans slow right down past a cap. If it was fine for a few days and then degraded, this is usually why. Our plans are built not to throttle, precisely to avoid that drop-off.
4
Congested cells. Airports, stations, a concert emptying out, New Year. Everyone is slow in those conditions and no plan fixes it; it clears when the crowd does.
5
Battery saver or background restrictions. Low Power Mode throttles background activity and networking. Turn it off and retry.

Three quick tests that isolate it in 30 seconds

Test Result What it means
Airplane mode on and off Back to normal Just a stale cell, not the plan
Manually pick a different local carrier Faster You were on the weak network
Step outside, away from the crowd Faster Environmental, nothing to fix
None of the above helped Possibly plan throttling — ask support

Why we keep telling people not to buy the smallest tier

People assume slowness is a signal problem when it is often the data allowance running low and the plan throttling. Real usage abroad runs far higher than at home: navigation open all day, camera translation of menus, photos back to family, live timetable checks.

Our advice is consistently the same — go mid-to-upper, keep headroom, and prefer a total-allowance plan — because discovering you are short while abroad costs far more hassle than the price difference did at purchase. If you are unsure, the data calculator gives you a figure with room built in.

Slow eSIM connection FAQ

The bars are full. Why is it still slow?

Bars only mean you are near a cell. They say nothing about how congested that cell is, or whether you are on the better of the available partner networks. Manually selecting a different carrier is the single most effective fix.

It is stuck on 3G. How do I get back to 4G or 5G?

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → the line → Voice & Data → 5G Auto or LTE. Android: Preferred network type inside the SIM settings. Note some regions simply have no local 5G coverage, in which case 4G is the ceiling.

Have I been throttled for using too much?

If it was fine for several days and then degraded, quite possibly. This is why we advise against the smallest tier — usage abroad is higher than most people expect. Check your remaining allowance, or ask us.

Is it normal to be slow the moment I land?

Yes. An entire aircraft switches on at once and competes for the same cells. It normally clears as you leave the terminal.

Do Peanutmo plans throttle?

Our headline plans run on native lines from the major local carrier and are built not to throttle — that is what lets us offer a money-back guarantee on connection quality. If it stays slow, send a speed test screenshot to LINE at @peanutmo / WhatsApp +886-921-963-203 and we will deal with it.
