Phuket eSIM 2026: beach-to-beach transport, island days, and what to set up first

A Phuket trip works differently from a city trip. You sleep on one beach, spend the day on another, and link the two with a bus, a rented bike or an app, with island-hopping days folded in between. Here is what the airport officially publishes for transport, how to move between beaches, and how to prepare for days on the water.

Getting online in Phuket: eSIM, airport SIM or roaming

OptionBest forWatch out for
eSIMBeach holidays and self-drive tripsInstall over Wi-Fi before you fly, then turn on data roaming
Local SIM at the airportTravellers who need a Thai numberThe Tourism Authority of Thailand states a passport is required
International roamingTransits and very short staysHigher rates; check the daily cap
Hotel Wi-FiIn the room and by the poolUseless on the beach, on a boat or moving between beaches

Island data needs look different from city data needs. You are not staring at a map all day, but you absolutely need a connection at a handful of moments: a late transfer driver, a snorkelling boat that shifts its departure, a pickup at the end of the day. Those are the points where being offline costs you.

Phuket eSIM: the Dtac network and when to install

Peanutmo’s Thailand eSIM runs on Dtac and covers the island’s main beaches and the town. The install:

1
Install in Taiwan before you fly. Scan over Wi-Fi; installing does not start the clock.
2
Turn on data roaming after landing. Point mobile data at the new plan. See our eSIM phone settings guide.
3
File the TDAC before departure. Submit within three days of arrival.

Arriving at Phuket airport: what the operator officially publishes

Phuket International Airport (HKT) has an international and a domestic terminal, both operating 24 hours according to the airport. These are the published ways out:

OptionRoutePublished fareHours
Phuket Smart BusAirport – Bann Khian – Cherngtalay – Surin – Kamala – Patong – Karon – Kata – Rawai100 bahtUntil 23:30
Airport bus (orange, 8411)Airport – Phuket TownBy distance, cash or QR on board08:00–21:00
Airport bus expressAirport – Patong Beach directNot publishedFrom the airport 08:00–20:00
Ride-hailing appsIsland-wideBy distanceAll day

Boarding is at entrance 3 on level 3 of the domestic terminal, towards the public transport park. The airport call centre is 1722.

Moving between Phuket beaches without a rail line

Phuket has no rail system, and the hop between beaches is the part of the trip people most often underestimate.

  • The Smart Bus links the main beaches: one route ties the airport to several west-coast beaches, which makes it the simplest option if you are staying along it.
  • Scooters and self-drive: total freedom, but sort out insurance and an international permit first. The hill roads wind, so download the map offline before you set off.
  • Ride-hailing apps: booking, pin and payment all happen in-app, so you need a connection throughout. Waits run longer at remote beaches than in town, so book earlier than feels necessary.
  • Island-hopping and snorkelling boats: signal fades offshore, so screenshot the meeting time, the schedule and the pickup details before you leave.

What a day of data in Phuket looks like

What you are doingRough daily useNotes
Maps and route checks150–350 MBHigher on self-drive days
Ride-hailing and messaging drivers50–100 MBNeeds a live connection throughout
Social feeds and stories300–600 MBDriven by how much video you watch
Beach and sunset uploads400 MB and upVideo pushes this up noticeably
Island-hopping daysLowMostly offline once you are out on the water

Island totals usually run a little below city totals, so 1GB a day suits most people. If you upload video daily, take the next tier up.

Picking days and data for a Phuket eSIM

  • Days: land day to departure day, plus one if a red-eye crosses midnight.
  • Data: 1GB a day is the baseline for a five-day holiday; go higher if you shoot and upload a lot.
  • Unlimited: the obvious pick when you are travelling as a family and tethering. See how unlimited plans handle fair use.
  • Phuket plus Bangkok: one Thailand plan covers both, no swapping.
On an island trip, the connection has to hold at the moments that matter
  • ・No physical SIM to swap, installed before you leave home
  • ・Delivered in about 10 minutes, with no airport queue
  • ・Refundable if the signal is unstable or the plan goes unused

Phuket data FAQ

How do I get from Phuket airport to Patong?

The airport lists the Phuket Smart Bus, running from the airport through Bann Khian, Cherngtalay, Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata to Rawai for 100 baht, boarding at entrance 3 on level 3 of the domestic terminal and running until 23:30. There is also an orange airport bus (8411) to Phuket Town charged by distance, payable on board in cash or by QR.

Is there a metro in Phuket?

No. Phuket has no rail system in service. Moving between beaches means the Smart Bus, the airport bus, a rented scooter or a ride-hailing app, so mobile data has a real effect on how smoothly the day runs.

Will I have signal on an island-hopping boat?

Reception fades as you move offshore, which is physics rather than a plan problem. The practical move is to screenshot the meeting time, the boat schedule and the return pickup details before you set off, so losing signal changes nothing.

Do I need to file the TDAC?

Yes. Thai Immigration requires every foreign national to submit the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days of arrival, for each entry, free through the official channel. See our TDAC walkthrough.

Do I need a passport to buy a local SIM in Phuket?

Yes. The Tourism Authority of Thailand states that buying a SIM requires a passport so the operator can register it against your name and passport number. An eSIM skips that step entirely.

How much data does an island trip use?

Most of it goes on maps, ride-hailing and photo uploads, and time on the water barely uses any. For five days, 1GB a day usually covers it; go higher if you upload video or tether. See our data sizing guide.
