Entering Mainland China 2026: Documents, Smart Gates and the Internet Problem

Mainland China is the destination where preparation matters most, and not for the reason people expect. Documents are one thing, but the part that actually derails trips is the internet: Google, LINE, Instagram and WhatsApp do not work on a normal local connection, and China is close to fully cashless. This guide covers the document requirements, the biometric smart gates, the digital customs declaration and how to solve the connectivity problem before you fly.

Travel documents: check validity before anything else

Requirements differ by nationality and by the type of document you hold, so check the rules that apply to you rather than relying on general advice. Two points apply to almost everyone:

• 📕 Validity matters: confirm your document covers the whole trip with margin. Airlines check at the counter, and an expired or short-dated document means you do not board.
• ⏳ Apply early: processing takes time, and rushing it close to departure is where problems start.
• 🗂️ Keep a digital copy: photograph your documents and store them somewhere you can reach offline.

On visa on arrival: since 20 November 2025 the number of ports offering it has increased from 58 to 100, adding Tianjin Port, Qingdao, Ningbo, Xiamen Gaoqi, Shenzhen Shekou, Haikou Meilan, Kunming Changshui and others. It is a useful fallback, but it takes time on the day, so arranging documents in advance is still the smoother route.

Biometric smart gates: what happens the first time

Major ports of entry now have smart lanes that let eligible travellers skip the staffed counter.

The customs declaration has also been fully digitised. Paper forms are no longer the default and several electronic submission options are offered - which means the chance you need a working connection on arrival has gone up.

The real problem: the internet does not work the way you expect

This is where mainland China differs from every other destination. On an ordinary local connection, Google, LINE, Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp are all blocked. And you will lean on connectivity more than usual, because:

• 💳 Alipay and WeChat Pay - China is close to fully cashless, and both need data to link a card and scan QR codes
• 🚕 Didi for taxis, plus QR codes for high-speed rail and flights
• 💬 Messaging home on LINE or WhatsApp to say you have arrived
• 🗺️ Maps - Google Maps needs a route around the block
