Malaysia MDAC 2026: Mandatory, Free, and the 3-Day Window Trips People Up

The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) is mandatory, not optional. Without it you can face long delays at immigration, and there is a risk of being refused entry. Its timing rule is also different from most countries - not 72 hours, but "within 3 days of arrival", counted in a specific way. What is MDAC, and why it is not optional

MDAC (Malaysia Digital Arrival Card) is Malaysia's digital arrival card. Since late 2023, all foreign travellers must complete it online before arrival - this is mandatory.

How the 3-day window is counted - get this wrong and you cannot file

This is where people slip up. MDAC must be filed within 3 days of arrival, counted as:

• 📅 Two days before your arrival date
• 📅 One day before
• 📅 The arrival date itself

So if you arrive on 20 July, the earliest you can file is 18 July. Filing sooner is not accepted, which cuts against the instinct to get every document out of the way weeks ahead. Put it in the calendar.

If you do forget, you can usually still scan a QR code and file at the airport, but it slows your clearance. Doing it before you leave is much easier.

Filing MDAC unlocks the autogate

This is MDAC's upside: travellers who complete the arrival card in advance can use the fast lane instead of queueing for a manual counter. Eligible nationalities have been able to use the automated gates at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA and KLIA 2) since 1 June 2024.

By contrast, travellers without MDAC queue for the manual counter and may be asked to file on the spot. In peak season the difference is significant.
