Macau trip planning 2026: proof of funds, airport bus fares and the Macau Pass discount rule

Macau trips are short and compact, and two things get overlooked most often: the proof-of-funds thresholds are written into the official entry rules, and a Macau Pass gives you no discount at all unless it has been registered. Here is the entry position, the airport transport, the travel cards and the data, from the official notices.

Entering Macau: the rules and the proof-of-funds thresholds

Taiwan’s Bureau of Consular Affairs lists Macau as visa-free for 30 days on its list updated 23 July 2026. The Macao SAR portal states the general rule that holders of an ordinary valid passport or travel document may stay up to 30 days.

Less widely known are the proof-of-funds thresholds, which the portal sets out explicitly:

Intended stayFunds you must be able to show
Up to 7 daysMOP 5,000
8 to 14 daysMOP 10,000
15 to 21 daysMOP 15,000
More than 21 daysMOP 20,000

Your travel document must also be valid for the intended stay plus a further 90 days. Ordinary tourists are rarely asked, but these are the published conditions, and the passport validity rule in particular is worth checking before you book.

From Macau International Airport: buses, shuttles and taxis

  • Public buses: a flat MOP 6.0. Routes include AP1 (Border Gate loop, 06:00–01:20), MT1 (07:00–00:00), MT4 (06:00–01:00), 26, 36, 51A and the overnight N2 (00:00–06:00).
  • Free hotel shuttles: 11:00 to 21:00, every 15 to 20 minutes, from the north exit car park.
  • Light Rapid Transit: the airport station connects to the north exit of the terminal via Macau Airport Avenue.
  • Taxi: MOP 21.00 for the first 1,600 metres, then MOP 2.00 per 220 metres, plus an MOP 8.00 airport surcharge.

The airport publishes no journey times for the bus routes, so leave slack on a connection; schedules and traffic can only be checked live.

Travel cards in Macau: the Macau Pass and the LRT

The Transport Bureau publishes the fares, and using a stored-value card roughly halves them:

PaymentOrdinary routesExpress routes
Cash (standard fare)MOP 6MOP 6
Macau Pass or other approved cardMOP 3MOP 4

The condition that matters: since 11 December 2021 an unregistered Macau Pass is charged the full MOP 6 per trip, so without registration there is no discount. Approved stored-value and student cards also allow a transfer within 45 minutes of starting a journey, extended to 60 minutes across districts; senior and disability cards travel free, as do children under one metre accompanied by an adult.

On the LRT, fares are set in four distance bands by number of stations, and an LRT card is sold at MOP 30 for adults, with a bonus of MOP 30 on every MOP 100 topped up. Since 24 May 2022 you can also tap a Macau Pass straight at the gate. The operator’s fare table and its own press release word the amounts differently, so take the notice at the gate as current.

Check the proof-of-funds threshold. Match your stay to the published figure.

Macau trip FAQ

Do Taiwan passport holders need a visa for Macau?

Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs lists Macau as visa-free for 30 days on its list updated 23 July 2026, with a note to check the Mainland Affairs Council for the latest position. The Macao SAR government portal states the general rule: holders of an ordinary valid passport or travel document are permitted to stay up to 30 days.

How much money do I need to show on arrival?

The Macao SAR portal publishes explicit thresholds: MOP 5,000 for a stay of up to 7 days, MOP 10,000 for 8 to 14 days, MOP 15,000 for 15 to 21 days and MOP 20,000 beyond 21 days. Your travel document must also be valid for the intended stay plus a further 90 days.

How do I get from the airport into town?

Macau International Airport publishes a flat public bus fare of MOP 6.0, on routes including AP1 towards the Border Gate, MT1, MT4, 26, 36, 51A and the overnight N2. Free hotel shuttles run 11:00 to 21:00 every 15 to 20 minutes from the north exit car park, and the LRT airport station connects to the north exit of the terminal.

How are Macau taxi fares calculated?

Both the airport and the tourism office publish a flag fall of MOP 21.00 for the first 1,600 metres, then MOP 2.00 for each further 220 metres, plus an MOP 8.00 airport surcharge.

Is a Macau Pass worth getting?

It depends how many rides you take. The Transport Bureau publishes a standard bus fare of MOP 6, against MOP 3 on ordinary routes and MOP 4 on express routes with a stored-value card, so roughly half. The catch: since 11 December 2021, a Macau Pass without completed real-name registration is charged the full MOP 6 per trip. Approved cards also allow a transfer within 45 minutes of starting a journey, extended to 60 minutes across districts.

How much data does a Macau trip use?

Macau is compact and much of it is walkable, so usage runs below a big city. For two days, 1GB a day is usually more than enough. If you are pairing it with Hong Kong, check whether your plan covers both. See our data sizing guide.
