What is a Macau eSIM, and who is it for?

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile that you install on your phone by scanning a QR code. There is no plastic card to collect, nothing to post, and nothing to lose. For Macau specifically this matters more than in most destinations, because most visitors arrive on a short trip — a weekend, a stopover from Hong Kong, or a two-day business visit — and simply do not have time to queue at an airport counter.

How much data do you actually need in Macau?

Macau is compact, and almost every hotel, casino, restaurant and shopping centre has Wi-Fi. In practice most visitors use far less mobile data here than they expect.

1–2 days, light use (maps, messaging, occasional photos): 1–2 GB is plenty.
3–5 days, normal use (plus social media, some video): 3–5 GB.
Heavy use (video calls, streaming, uploading clips, hotspot for a second device): 8 GB or more.

A useful rule: one hour of standard-definition video is roughly 0.7 GB, while a full day of maps and messaging is usually under 200 MB. If you are unsure, buy one tier up — the price difference is small and running out mid-trip is genuinely inconvenient.

Before you buy: confirm your phone supports eSIM

This is the single most common reason a purchase goes wrong, and it takes ten seconds to check.

iPhone: XS, XR and every model after that. Open Settings → General → About and scroll to the bottom; if you see an EID number, you are fine.
Android: Pixel 3 and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and most recent flagships. Support on mid-range Android models is inconsistent, so check the EID under Settings → About phone.
Carrier lock: a phone locked to your home carrier will refuse any third-party eSIM, no matter how new it is. Contact your carrier to unlock it before you travel.

Installing and activating your Macau eSIM

Install while you still have stable Wi-Fi. Do this at home, not at the airport. Go to Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your confirmation email. Installing does not start your data allowance.

After you land, select the line. Set the Peanutmo profile as your Cellular Data line and turn Data Roaming ON for that line only. Leave your home line on for calls and SMS, with its own data switched off.

Do not scan too early. Most plans start counting from first activation on the network. Install early, activate on arrival — that is the sequence that avoids wasting a day.

Keep a screenshot or printout of the QR code. If you reset your phone mid-trip you will need it, and you cannot download it without a connection.

No signal after landing? Work through this list

Data Roaming is off for the eSIM line. This is the cause roughly half the time.
Your home line is still set as the Cellular Data line. Switch it over manually.
Airplane mode was never fully turned off, or the phone is still holding an old network registration — toggle airplane mode on and off for fifteen seconds.
Network selection is set to Manual from a previous trip. Set it back to Automatic.
