If you want snow in Korea, Seoul is not where to look. The capital gets snow most winters but rarely enough to settle for long. The reliable snow is two to three hours east, in Gangwon province, and the winter-only attractions — ice fishing festivals, light gardens, ski slopes — all cluster there. This is where to go, and when.

When does it actually snow?

Winter-only places worth the journey

Nami Island. The tree-lined avenues under snow are the image everyone knows. About 90 minutes from Seoul, easy as a day trip, and genuinely better in winter than summer.
Garden of Morning Calm. The winter light festival runs from December through March. Best combined with Nami Island in the same day.
Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival. Ice fishing on a frozen river, usually January. Very cold, very local, and unlike anything else.
Vivaldi Park, Yongpyong and Alpensia. The main ski resorts. Yongpyong hosted Olympic events and has the most reliable snow.
Deoksugung and Gyeongbokgung palaces. Seoul palaces after a snowfall are worth rearranging your day for. Check the forecast and go immediately.
Jeonju Hanok Village. Not a snow destination as such, but the traditional roofs under snow and the food scene make it a strong winter choice.

A one-week winter route

Days one to three — Seoul. Palaces, Bukchon, Gwangjang Market, cafés. Keep one flexible morning in reserve so you can react to a snowfall.

Day four — Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm. Long day, worth it. Book transport the day before.

Days five and six — Gangwon. Ski, or simply stay somewhere with snow and a hot spring. Overnight rather than day-tripping.

Day seven — back to Seoul. Indoor day: museums, a spa, and shopping in Myeongdong or Hongdae.

Practical points for winter day trips

Book intercity transport in advance. KTX and express buses to Gangwon fill up at weekends throughout the season.
Daylight is short. Sunset around 5:30pm in January. Leave early; an 8am departure is normal for a Nami Island day.
Resorts rent everything. You do not need to bring ski gear, but book equipment hire ahead at weekends.
Keep your phone warm. Cold drains lithium batteries fast, and your phone holds your transport tickets and maps.
Ice underfoot. Grippy waterproof boots matter more at Nami Island and the ice festival than they do in central Seoul.

Coverage outside Seoul
