Step 1: go to the official site and create an account
Apply only through the official Indonesian immigration portal. There are many third-party sites that charge a substantial markup for submitting the same form, and some are outright scams. If a site is not on the immigration department's own domain, do not use it.
Registration requires an email address and a password. You will need to verify the email before continuing, so use one you can access on the same device.
Step 2: choose the correct visa type
Indonesia offers several categories, and the right one depends on your nationality, the purpose of your trip and how long you are staying. The two most commonly used by tourists are the visa on arrival applied for online in advance, and the tourist e-visa. Which is available to you — and which is cheaper — depends on your passport.

The declarations you also need
A visa alone is not the whole picture. Indonesia also operates electronic declarations that are typically completed shortly before arrival rather than weeks ahead — customs and health declarations among them, consolidated into a single official app or web form.
These are usually completed within a few days of arrival, and they generate a QR code you present at the airport. Because they are time-limited, they cannot be done at the same time as your visa — put a reminder in your calendar for two days before departure.
