Best eSIM for France 2026: single-country or Europe-wide, and how to size your data

Choosing data for a French trip comes down to one question: will you leave France? Stay inside the country and a France-only plan is simplest; cross a border and a multi-country plan earns its keep. Here is the difference, what the Paris Métro is actually like for signal, how to size your data, and what to arrange before you fly.

Best eSIM for France: single-country or multi-country first

Settle this before you look at days and gigabytes — it matters more than either.

ItineraryPlanWhy
France only (Paris in and out, or a loop through the south)France eSIMA dedicated plan, with the widest choice of data and duration
France plus Spain, Italy, Germany and so onEurope eSIM (42 countries)No swap and no reconfiguration at the border
France plus the United KingdomCheck UK coverage separatelyThe UK is outside Schengen and has its own entry rules
France plus TürkiyeHandle separatelyTürkiye sits outside the Europe plan and requires a visa

People often get stuck on "it is only one day in Italy — is it worth switching?". In practice, what a multi-country plan saves is not money but the time spent swapping a card and resetting an APN at a border.

Picking data and duration for a France eSIM

The plan offers two ways of counting, so choose the type first and the number second.

  • Daily allowance (1GB, 2GB or 3GB a day): resets every day, which suits an evenly paced trip with navigation in constant use. Going over on one day does not affect the next.
  • Total allowance (10GB or 20GB): one pool for the whole trip, which suits concentrated use — heavy map work for three days in Paris, then little more than messaging out in the vineyards.
  • Unlimited: for tethering a laptop or tablet, or uploading a lot of video, without doing arithmetic.
  • Duration: count from the day you land to the day you leave, adding a day if an overnight flight crosses the date line.

Where signal actually varies: the Métro and the south

Two places are worth knowing about in advance, so you do not mistake them for a problem with the plan.

1
The Paris Métro. Above-ground sections and main stations hold up well; older lines drop out in the tunnels. Check your interchange on the platform and you will not be refreshing underground.
2
Driving in the south and the wine regions. Cities and countryside are both covered, but mountains and very remote stretches can thin out. Save the day's route offline before a long leg.
3
Crossing borders. The plan settles on the strongest local network without any manual switching — but if your itinerary genuinely crosses borders, the Europe plan is the easier answer from the start.

Entry requirements and what to arrange before you fly

Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs lists France and the other Schengen states as visa-free, with up to 90 days in total in any 180-day period (list updated 23 July 2026). Two further items belong in the timeline:

  • EES: biometric registration at the Schengen border, handled by national authorities with nothing to apply for in advance. See EES at the French border.
  • ETIAS: due to start in the last quarter of 2026, after which visa-exempt travellers need prior authorization. Fee and validity are in our Europe ETIAS guide.
  • The eSIM: install over Wi-Fi before you fly, then switch on data roaming after landing.

France eSIM: frequently asked questions

Do Taiwan passport holders need a visa for France?

No. Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs lists France and the other Schengen states as visa-free for Taiwan passport holders, with up to 90 days in total in any 180-day period (list updated 23 July 2026). The EU's ETIAS is due to start in the last quarter of 2026, after which visa-exempt travellers will need prior authorization — see our Europe ETIAS guide.

France-only plan or a Europe-wide one?

If the whole trip stays in France, the France plan is the simpler choice. If you will cross into Spain, Italy or Germany, the Europe eSIM covers 42 countries with no swap at the border. The deciding factor is not price — it is whether you cross a border at all.

Is there signal on the Paris Métro?

Above-ground sections and the main stations are stable; older lines drop out inside tunnels. That is the Métro's infrastructure rather than any difference between plans. The practical habit is to load your connection on the platform before heading into the tunnel.

How much data should I buy?

Most usage on a French itinerary comes from maps, museum audio guides and photo uploads. For a short city trip 1GB a day is usually comfortable; if you upload video or tether a tablet, move up a tier. The usage table in how much eSIM data do you need is a good reference.

When should I install the eSIM?

Install at home over Wi-Fi before you fly, then switch on data roaming after landing. Installing does not start the day count, so there is nothing to lose by doing it early.

Does it work in the south of France and the wine regions?

Coverage includes French cities and countryside, from Provence through to the wine-growing areas, settling automatically on whichever local network is strongest. Mountains and very remote stretches can still thin out, so saving the day's route offline before a long drive is worth doing.
