Hangzhou Travel Guide 2026: West Lake, Lingyin Temple and Longjing
West Lake has been the subject of Chinese poetry for a thousand years, which is a lot of expectation for one body of water to carry. It holds up. Hangzhou is also an hour from Shanghai by high-speed rail, which makes it the easiest cultural detour in eastern China — and unlike a lot of Chinese sightseeing, most of the good bits here are free and outdoors.
Hangzhou travel 2026: best season and where to stay
Spring and autumn are the reason people come. Late March to April gives you peach blossom and willow along the causeways; October and November give you osmanthus and, if you time it, the maples at Lingyin. Summer is hot, humid and packed; winter is quiet and occasionally beautiful when it snows on the lake, which is rare enough to be worth the gamble only if you are already nearby.

Avoid the national holiday weeks in early October and early May unless crowds are part of what you came for. West Lake during Golden Week is a slow-moving river of people.

How much data. A full day circling West Lake means continuous GPS, plus temple bookings, shared-bike unlocking and a lot of photographs. Take a mid-tier or larger total-allowance plan rather than the cheapest daily cap — the bikes and the boat tickets both need a live connection, and being throttled at the far end of the lake means walking back.

Beyond West Lake: tea villages and canals
Two things reliably beat a second lap of the lake. Longjing village, twenty minutes from the centre, is terraced tea fields and tea houses where you can sit outside and drink the thing that is grown on the slope in front of you. And the Grand Canal around Qiaoxi has a slower, more residential feel than anywhere in the scenic area, with a night cruise if you want it.
If you have a third day, Xixi Wetland is worth it in spring; in other seasons it is pleasant rather than remarkable.

Is Hangzhou a good day trip from Shanghai?
It works, at about an hour each way by high-speed rail, but you will only see West Lake. For Lingyin Temple and Longjing as well, stay a night — the difference in what you get is large.
Do I need to book West Lake?
No. The lake and the causeways are free and open. Boats, Leifeng Pagoda and Lingyin Temple are ticketed, and the temple in particular needs an advance timed booking.

Yes, through Alipay with an international card linked. It is the single most useful thing you can set up before arriving — West Lake is much better by bike than on foot.
