Guangzhou is where you go to eat. Shenzhen has the tech and Hong Kong has the skyline, but the Cantonese food that the rest of the world copies was worked out here, and a morning in a proper tea house is worth rearranging an itinerary for. Guangzhou travel 2026: entry rules and best time to go
Guangzhou is covered by both of China's visa-free schemes: the 30-day unilateral exemption for 77 nationalities, and the 240-hour transit route for 54 nationalities travelling on to a third country. Baiyun Airport is a designated port for the transit scheme. Check which one your passport falls under before booking — the transit route needs an onward ticket, the 30-day one does not.

How much data. Attraction bookings, metro QR codes, translation apps and maps all run continuously, and photographing food is the entire point of Guangzhou. The smallest plan is false economy here. Take a mid-tier or larger total-allowance plan so a long day out does not end with you rationing megabytes.

Canton Tower tickets and how to book

Chimelong is not one attraction but a resort — safari park, water park, amusement park and circus on one site in Panyu district, well south of the centre.

The metro reaches Panyu but it is a long ride from the city centre. If Chimelong is the main reason for your trip, stay out there for the nights you need it rather than commuting twice a day.
Where to eat dim sum in Guangzhou

Two practical notes. Queue numbers are issued through WeChat mini-programs at most popular places, so you need working data to even join the line. And breakfast yum cha is the real meal here — dim sum at dinner is a tourist schedule, not a local one.

Do I need cash in Guangzhou?
Very little. Alipay and WeChat Pay accept international Visa and Mastercard, and almost everything from metro fares to street food takes a QR code. Carry a small amount of yuan as a fallback and set up the apps before you fly.
